Processor Speed and the Performance of a PC

The Imprtance of Processor Speed

The fastest CPUs sold by Intel and AMD are not necessarily any more those that have the highest clock speed. Read on below for more:

Understanding The Importance of Processor Speed: Important Facts You Should Know

The development of processor technology and in particular processor speed has progress unbelievably rapidly speed since the first development of the PC. The processor speed, which is taken to mean the speed of the "central processing unit" CPU (that's the main computer chip inside your computer) is one of the most important parts of every computer in deciding how quickly it will present its functions to you, the user.

Some new features which have appeared in recent years, and which have still further improved the speed of action of our computers, have been the introduction of multiple cores into ordinary computers of "dual core" and "multi-core" processors. Quite simply the idea is to provide the CPU with two and now more (up to six in the latest CPUs) cores or computer "main processing chips" inside the "main chip" in the fastest CPUs. In order to make use of the extra "computer cores within a computer core, the software as had to be upgraded, both from 32 bit to 64 simultansous "bits", and now also separates the work stream of the computer into separate parts for each core by "multi-threading", so that simultaneous actions take place inside your computer which although you don't see them, also speed up your machine.

So, now that multiple cores and "multi-threading" takes place inside all modern computers, the CPU speed, which was originally only dependent on the number of cycles or "hertz" of the CPU clock per second ("clock speed"), is also dependent on more factors which include:

a) The number of cores

b) The clock speed

c) The speed of the memory (RAM).

Over a long time, processor speed was endlessly expanded, but developers eventually realised that due to heat production and other problems, it was better to increase the number of simultaneous actions taking place in the computer, so now the number of cores is an important aspect of computer performance.

In some respects, this high technology push has also been enhanced by the presence of two challengers in the market, always striving to beat the other for the speed of their processors. The two big producers in competition are Advance Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel Corp.

Discovering an ideal processor (or fastest CPU) which fulfills your demands to set up your own computer isn't that difficult. You must empathise with a couple of things that could assist you to determine what the best processor is for you.

AMD and Intel processors bring their own benefits. The Intel's primary benefit over AMD processor is its popularity in the marketplace and its strength in numbers when repairs are needed. Then again, the AMD is always the lower priced with its Intel counterpart, at the same processor speed and which runs faster in gaming and graphics applications programmes is always a hotly debated point. Some months the latest Intel CPU is fastest and then AMD brings out a new CPU and once again beats Intel, and so it goes on!

As we hinted earlier, there are the two types of processor architecture available, the 32-bit and 64-bit architecture. 64-bit is the newset and today more common as it is the newest, and is replacing old 32-bit computer operating systems. You still have the choice of either versions in the Windows operating system "Windows 7". That is the 32-bit and 64-bit are alternatives in the latest Windows 7. A 64-bit CPu is "backward compatible", which means that a 32-bit processor won't function on a 64-bit OS, but a 64-bit processor will run on an older 32-bit OS. It is always best to use th 64 bit system if you can and want to get the fastest speed from your processor, however, not all software will run on the 64-bit OS, and for that reason quite a few people have not installed the 64-bit OS when they could have done.

SUMMARY

Once purchasing a desktop computer or a notebook, among the most significant specs is the processor speed. Processor is best likened to the brainpower of the computer. It makes entirely the computings needed. From starting your computer, to browse the internet with a web browser and everything else you do on your computer, the processor manages whole the computing required and so its speed is the most important of all.

The better processor speed is, the quicker you could start using your computer programmes, and the sooner they provide new pages, and the answers to calculations. A couple of years past a quick processor speed was essential for numerous computer programme to even work decently. Today nearly all computer programs will function even on the slowest processor, with the exception of the latest games.

Many people say that the difference in noticeable speed among a standard and the fastest processor for normal office and web browsing work isn't really enough for daily usage to be worth investing a lot of money in the very fastest CPUs. Practically everyone will barely detect the difference, other than that several computer programs might make make you wait a couple of seconds less when returning a result. Those improvements tend only to come when executing heavy calculating tasks, such as in applications like photoshop, or video-coding and running the latest games.

However, in those latter examples a fast processor speed from the fastest CPU you can get, does give a difference.
